Walking in Love
When we go to God as the
source of all life, we receive the Holy Spirit, who authenticates our life in
Christ. In Ephesians Paul begins chapter 5 with a call to imitate God. But God
does something amazing with our obedience to emulate Him. When we imitate God,
we grow into spiritual maturity by the power of the Holy Spirit living inside
us, and we become genuine followers of Christ.
At the start of chapter 5,
Paul says we are God’s beloved children, and as His children, we should be
imitators of God. Being an imitator isn’t a bad thing, as long as we’re
imitating something that’s good and pure and true. We’ll never go wrong when we
follow in His likeness. That’s why we’re here; to love God and to love others. And
the way we love God and others is to become more like Christ, which is evident
in how we treat others, and to give Him all the glory for all that is good.
Just as Christ demonstrated His love for us by giving Himself up for us, we
also should love to such a degree that we would be willing to give up our lives
for the sake of another. Self-sacrifice is the truest demonstration of love.
Gratitude radically realigns
our perspective with God’s perspective; then the surface-allure of sin pales in
comparison. It’s good to be an imitator of God and walk in love and give thanks
for all we have in our lives. What are some ways we, as Christ-Followers, can
imitate God’s love.
The Bible says God is light,
and we are children of the light. When Christ lives in us, His light lives
inside us as well. We can’t accidentally leave our light at home, either. We carry
this light with us everywhere we go. This also means our ere presence could
cause discomfort for someone who is actively walking in darkness. Light exposes
darkness. When we’re walking right, our lives bear witness to the Light.
To walk in love, we must
live a life of self-sacrifice, putting others ahead of ourselves. We must also
live with thankful hearts. To walk in the light, we must remember that Christ’s
light lives within us, which means our conduct should be different from the conduct
of nonbelievers. To walk in wisdom, we must abstain from drunkenness and
instead be filled with the Spirit. We should speak to one another in psalms,
singing praises to the Lord, and we should continue to give thanks for who God
is and what He has already done.
God’s mercy and grace are all the more
magnified in light of His unimaginable power.
