Faith in Action

My friends, we are not those who give up hope and so are lost; but we are of the company who live by faith and so are saved. (Hebrews 10:39, The Voice)

Faith is the assurance of things you have hoped for, the absolute conviction that there are realities you’ve never seen. It was by faith that our forebears were approved. Through faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God; everything we now see was fashioned from that which is invisible. (Hebrews 11:1-3, The Voice)

Faith is believing in what is true. Faith has two elements: 1) being convinced of the truth, being certain of reality, having evidence of unseen things, and 2) believing, hoping in, embracing, seizing the truth.

Faith begins as hope and indeed is unseen; so many doubt that it is real. Hebrews 11 – The Hall of Faith – is the proof that faith is a reality that can be trusted.

Like the individuals portrayed in Chapter 11, if we are willing God can and will use us. He often chooses men and women who lack confidence in their own abilities to do His work because He is made strong in our weakness.

Stories of faith and faithfulness are central to Christ Followers. The writer of Hebrews recalls some of the most memorable examples of how people of faith lived their lives. But what is faith? Faith is more than belief; it is trust, assurance, and firm conviction. Ironically most of those who lived by faith never fully realized the promises God had made. Like us they journeyed as strangers and exiles, longing for another country. We should remember their patient faith when we face prolonged hardships and allow the trials we face to strengthen our faith rather than destroy it. If we are comfortable here and don’t face suffering for our faith, perhaps we aren’t fully living by faith and looking forward to a future hope.

Faith rejoices without seeing or understanding what God is doing – it is the confident expectation. In order to have great faith we must have a personal relationship with God, that relationship comes by reading and studying His Word; believing and trusting in His Son Jesus Christ. God's word must be hoped for, embraced, seized! Luke 17:5 (NIV) The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" He replied, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and planted in the sea,' and it will obey you."

  • C.S. Lewis: "We must not encourage in ourselves or others any tendency to work up a subjective state which, if we succeeded, we should describe as "faith", with the idea that this will somehow insure the granting of our prayer.... The state of mind which desperate desire working on a strong imagination can manufacture is not faith in the Christian sense. It is a feat of psychological gymnastics."
  • A.W. Tozer: "I do not recall another period when "faith" was as popular as it is today. If only we believe hard enough we'll make it somehow. So goes the popular chant. What you believe is not important. Only believe... What is overlooked in all this is that faith is good only when it engages truth; when it is made to rest upon falsehood it can and often does lead to eternal tragedy. For it is not enough that we believe; we must believe the right thing about the right One.

Blessings!

All That is Within Me

If you are like me and have an iPhone, you've probably spent the last couple days trying to figure out all the updates. If you have more than one Apple device, such as an iPad, you've spent even more time updating it as well. Or maybe that's on your to-do list for today (or tomorrow). It's not a quick update, it takes a fair amount of time; then once you update, you've got to reset a few things. So, that got me to thinking, have I spent the same amount of time alone with God, reading His Word, reaching out to other believers, or witnessing to the lost? I must confess, my answer would have to be "no." God loves us so much, He rejoices when we call on Him, when we reach out to Him in prayer, and when we meditate on His Word. He's so patient and so full of grace. I keep thinking back to the scripture: Deuteronomy 6:5 - Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. All means completely, entirely; for ...

31 Days - Day 21

Today, I'm wondering where the time's going and what will I post?! My brain is on empty. So, what comes to mind at this time is Mandisa's song "Overcomer" which has been playing on the radio a lot lately. Jesus said in John16:33, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” Matthew Henry's Commentary on this verse: He comforts them with a promise of peace in him, by virtue of his victory over the world, whatever troubles they might meet with in it ( John 16:33 ): “ These things have I spoken, that in me you might have peace ; and if you have it not in me you will not have it at all, for in the world you shall have tribulation ; you must expect no other, and yet may cheer up yourselves, for I have overcome the world .” Observe: 1. The end Christ aimed at in preaching this farewell sermon to his disciples: That in him they might have peace . He did n...
